Many areas of the law can be quite complicated and require the assistance of a solicitor to unravel them. This would be true for the area of medical negligence suited best to a medical negligence solicitor. Sometimes a claim a person makes may not be on their personal behalf but that of a relative. This can make an already tricky area of the law even more so.

When making a claim on behalf a relative, providing information can be a bit trickier. Information pertaining to the situation did not happen to you firsthand. Therefore, it may be difficult to totally describe the situation with accuracy to a solicitor. Sometimes for whatever reason the relative is unable to make the claim. Typically when you make a claim on the behalf of a relative it is because they are unable to do so for themselves. This may make it even more difficult to obtain the necessary information. For instance, the relative could be a newborn baby who is suffering for problems while being delivered. They may also be an elderly relative who has received inappropriate. In these types of situations, it is up to the relatives to file the claim.

First, a written complaint must be sent to the health care professional or the responsible organization. Sometimes these claims can be resolved quickly as doctors want these cases to be solved quickly. Also, in some situations the physician or hospital will want to settle the matter out of court. Even if the situation is not resolved quickly, most hospitals will take measures so the situation does not happen again to someone else. This is another reason a claim should be made. To keep the problem from happening all over again. Once you receive a letter in response to your written complaint, then you should see a solicitor. They can advise you on how to proceed with the case

One of the questions that every gastric band use has at the back of his or her mind is how much weight he or she would lose after a gastric band.

Different Aspects of Weight Loss

There are different aspects of weight loss after a gastric band.

First aspect is the expectation of the band user as to what he or she is going to lose and whether the expectation is really fulfilled with the use of the gastric band.

The time span required for such weight loss.

Whether such weight loss is achieved in a healthy way and whether there is some after affects of the use of the band.

Last but not the least; how much weight one should lose after taking to a gastric band

Expectation Part

It is expected and many experts also agree to it that gastric band patients will lose around 50% to 60% of their weight over a period of two years. It is also expected that most users will lose weight within the next one year. It should also be remembered that such weight loss is only average loss and some users can get even better results than that.

Example Weight Loss

An illustrative example on weight loss can clarify the issues involved. For instance;

A person with a height of 67 inches weights around 250 pounds;

Ideal weight for such person would be around 160 pounds;

It indicates that the person is overweight by around 90 pounds;

He or she may lose 60% of it or around 54 pounds in a two year use period and the weight after that will come down to 196 pounds or an excess of 36 pounds only.

Weight Loss On Longer Terms

Scientists and experts have conducted a lot of experiments and researches on the issues of weight loss after one takes to gastric band since its first appearance in 1993. Data and information for the last 18 years indicate that the band offers durable weight loss for majority of the people while the material does not degrade over longer uses. Many design improvements have taken place with the latest generation of the gastric bands which are the A-P bands and such evolutions may continue for the next 30-40 years. Thus there can be no reasons to consider that the band will not work for pretty long period over the years.

Compulsive Slimmer

One of the unique facts about the gastric band for weight loss is that the user can become compulsive slimmer. An example is that of Michelle Woods from Perham Down, Hampshire who lost around 101 pounds in just one year from March 2007 through March 2008. The danger is that the user can become slimming addict which is not a very good thing either though it is better than being overweight and obese.

It is all about the control and mental set up of the user that can give her the perfect slimming strategy with the band.

When someone takes to gastric band and goes through the operative process, it is essential that such person follows a pre or post operative diets. It will basically require changes in the lifestyle of the person adapting to gastric band. Unless the right choice of food is made there will be little chances of success in weight loss program.

Post Surgery Diets for First Two Weeks

For the next two weeks following the gastric band operation, it will be necessary for the patient to take only liquid diets. It will help optimum healing process for the patients. Some of the factors to be taken into consideration in consuming the liquid diets are as follows.

Despite being liquid in form the diet should be balanced that should contain adequate protein, energy, and other nutrients.

Such balanced diet will help good and faster recovery of health and complement the weight loss program adopted adequately.

No solid food should be consumed during the first two weeks after band surgery.

Dieter will also take multivitamins as well as calcium supplements that could be either in chewable or liquid forms. A brand that will contain minerals and vitamins will serve the purpose quite well.

About Fluid Intake

Usually after the gastric band surgery, the user should consume at least 2.5 to 3.5 liters of water every day by evenly spreading them throughout the day. At the same time the liquid intake should match properly with the anatomic requirements of the particular person concerned. One can determine the dehydration levels in the body checking the urine. If the urine is pale in color it will mean that the user is drinking enough. However, at least drinking 200 ml of fluid per day will keep one healthy and hearty.

Fluid to Avoid

However there is certain fluid that needs to be avoided.

Carbonated drinks should be avoided since the user of gastric bands cannot expel gas and air.

Trapped air can cause bloating and it will result in distension of the stomach walls and it may cause the gastric band to slip.

One should not chew gums either that can result in slipping of the band;

Though feeling hungry at this time could be normal, but that is the result of stretch receptors triggered by surgery and if the user remains motivated, the sensation will pass.

Fluids To Take

Some of the fluids that gastric band users can intake are –

A pint of semi skimmed milk which comes to 600 ml on daily basis.

It will give the user the daily variance of nutrients and minerals.

At least three servings of milkshakes and soups can help out.

Diluted fruit juice containing low calories mixed with water is an ideal post gastric band diet.

Herbal tea and coffee can be taken.

Water can also be consumed in adequate quantum.

Dieter should migrate to soft diets after 3-4 weeks time in which scrambled eggs, omelets, cottage pie, well cooked cauliflower, and skimmed milk would be the diet to be taken.

But at this point of time the dieter should avoid salad or crunchy food.

Numerical strength of obese people is increasing day by day and today around 33.8% of adults in United States alone are suffering from obesity problems. Not only that, around 17% or 12.5 million of children as well as adolescents in the age group of 2-19 are also found to be suffering from obesity according to the data obtained from the National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES).

Scenario State Wise

In course of the last two and half decades, obesity has risen in United States almost dramatically. As on date, not a single state in the country has obesity prevalence that is less than 20%. Moreover, 36 states have the obesity prevalence of over 25% and 12 out of the said 36 have more than 30% of or more of obesity prevalence. These 12 states are Missouri, Mississippi, Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Arkansas.

High and Low

It can be seen that states like Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia all have over 30% of obesity prevalence. However, the highest instance of obesity prevalence is found in Mississippi with 34%.

Reasons for Obesity

But what the reasons for obesity are? There are several reasons for it.

Obesity occurs when the calorie intake exceeds the calorie consumption of the body;

It is often the result of wayward life leading;

People that are inactive and does not indulge in much physical activities often end up with obesity;

Eating too much can also result in obesity;

Imbalanced food can create such obesity as well.

But the greatest reasons for obesity always are lack of physical activity. In result the calories are accumulated in the body without consumption and burning out. Unutilized calories are stored in form of fats in the body and results in getting someone the much dreaded obesity.

Rise of Obesity and Consequential Ailments

Obesity is not only a difficult thing to get rid of but it can also create numerous ailments as well. Some of the major ailments that could result from obesity are –

Diabetes that could be both type 2 and type 1;

High blood pressure; and

Many other ailments including stomach troubles and anxieties.

Problem of Obesity

Obesity is a worldwide problem and there are many people who will do anything and everything and often court physical problems and unwarranted ailments. Sometimes they take to fad or starvation diets and lose some weight in the process but the moment they stop the dieting, all the weights and fats they lost in the process, comes back. Traditional medication, dieting, and even workouts have often failed to achieve results and in such cases many people take to weight loss surgery as the last resort to get rid of their obesity.

Survey Results

Nationwide survey indicated that the three major reasons for obesity are -

Diabetes and such other ailments;

Too much leisurely life;

Inactivity during leisure times.

It was found that all the three conditions exist in very high levels in the southern part of the country whereas the existence of these conditions is low in the north and north-eastern part of the country.

However, obesity is on the rise all along.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric bands that are also known widely as lap bands are inflatable silicone devices that are usually placed around the upper portion of the stomach. Placement is made using laparoscopic surgery to treat obesity.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery

In essence; the laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgery is a type of bariatric surgeries and is usually applied for the obesity patients who have body mass index of around 40 or more. It is also used for such patients who are suffering from certain ailments that are offshoot of use of the surgical procedure and resultant weight loss. Some such ailments are –

Sleep apnea;

Type 1 or type 2 diabetes;

Different types of arthritic developments;

GERD;

Hypertension which is also known as high blood pressure; and

Metabolic syndromes.

Various other ailments may also come up but these are the common ones.

Official Approval

Food and Drug Administration expanded its approval on adjustable gastric bands for such patients who have body mass or BMI in the range of 30-40 in addition to one of the preconditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. Of course the use is permissible only after all available channels are exhausted and they failed to produce the desired results. And it includes exercising and dieting as well.

Different Types of Adjustable Bands

Various types of adjustable brands are available in the market. Two of the types have been approved by FDA for the United States markets.

Lap band system that was approved back in 2001 is a device that is available in five different sizes and has been continuously undergoing modification over the years. Latest developments in the line are Lap-Band AP-L and the Lap-Band AP-S. Both of them feature standardized injection port that is sutured into the skin and at the same time fill volumes of 14ml and 10ml respectively.

Realize adjustable gastric band was approved by the FDA in the year 2007. Like lap bands it is also improving from time to time. Latest in the line is the Realize-C that has 14% more adjustability in comparison to traditional Realize bands. Unlike the lap band, it has injection port devoid of sutures.

Adjustable Bands Outside U.S

A couple of adjustable gastric bands are also used outside United States; namely; Heliogast and Midband. However, these bands have not been approved by the FDA. Midband was the first to hit the market in the year 2000 while Heliogast made its debut in 2003. Midband does not contain any sharp edges or irregularities and is opaque to X-Rays. On the other hand Heliogast bands are streamlined and ease insertion during the operations.

Gastric bands are used to help severely obese people in losing weight and they can be adjusted in 4-6 weeks time and the entire procedure takes only 10 minutes. It is also possible performing the adjustments periodically and it will help the user to lose weight continuously. Best part of it is that it also dispenses with the requirement of any surgical operations.

Everyone desires to become slimmer and thinner these days and the figures of super slim models and celebrities on the TV channels, internet, hoardings, and print media has added fuel to the fire of passion for the slim and trimmed body. Ultimate way of achievement of this objective is fat shedding and weight loss.

Weight Loss Methods

One of the weight loss surgery is the laparoscopic surgeries where the incisions are small in size;

Another procedure is gastric bypass where the wounds are much bigger;

Among the two, the weight loss surgery the gastric bypass is more popular in United States and it costs around $15,000 per surgery; and

In this gastric bypass involves sheaves of loose skin and at the same time carrying out lifts other parts of the body like the thighs, face, stomach, lower body as well as the whole body.

Use of Weight Loss Surgery as Cosmetic Surgery

Weight loss surgery is often used as a form of cosmetic surgery. It is designed in a way that after carrying out the surgery, the patient looks normal. While this is basically a face lift surgery, it could be even life saver for the people suffering with obesity. In such cases it would be much more than an operation to get safe body weight but will also enhance their life span.

Understanding the Risks

Every aspirant for weight loss through surgery should realize that it has some inherent risks. Many people fail to understand the risks properly and therefore pay dearly at the end of it.

One of the proven procedures for weight loss is gastric band and it is quite widely used by weight loss aspirants. In addition; it is also suggested by the physicians as well as dieticians also suggest it as one of the best weight loss solutions. But the question is how a gastric band works?

Gastric Banding Procedure

Usually laparoscopic gastric band helps weight loss as well weight controls in a couple of ways.

It will create sense of fullness as the gastric band presses the stomach and the brain will consider that the stomach is full and it does not require any more food.

Creating smaller stomach pouch it helps get the user feel full with little food quantum only. This is achieved as the band compresses the size of the passage through which the food will pass. In result the digestive process is delayed as well.

Views of Health Professionals

Most of the health professionals also support the use of laparoscopic gastric banding procedure. Such professionals include both general and specialist practitioners.
